Throughout this writing for engineering course, I have learned many skills vital to my future career in Biomedical engineering and feel better prepared for whatever’s out there, the world. From learning the structure of different documents, to practicing writing with a focus on the audience and purpose, this course has taught me how to gear my work towards a professional environment. On many of the assignments I did struggle, facing many challenges on the way, but in the end, I was able to persevere and become a better student, writer, and engineer.
One of the first major assignments in this course was creating a resume and cover letter for a job/internship posting. For this assignment we really had to focus on our Audience since it would reflect our chances of getting the position. We did this by using a format that is easy for the reader, with little wording, our name in large font at the top, subtitles, etc. The most challenging part of this assignment for me personally would have to be trying to fit all of my experience on one page. I really had to pick and choose what would be most geared towards the posting. However, the textbook reading did help a lot when figuring what outline I wanted to choose for the resume and cover letter. I ended up choosing a premade format from Google Docs and after filling it out I posted it to Brightspace.
Another major assignment in this class was the Lab Report where we had to conduct an experiment on the probability of dice and write about it. For this assignment we had to conduct outside research in order to provide further analysis on the experiment. In order to do so, we learned how to use the libraries database for our own research, improving our information literacy. Since we had to conduct research we also had to use citations in APA format in order to properly give credit to the information used. When doing any type of research, reading is a fundamental skill required in order to absorb the information within the different texts. This assignment provided me further practice into these areas which is very useful in any future cases of writing I may need to accomplish. The technology required for this assignment was Google Docs, CCNY Library Database, and Brightspace. We also had to make sure to focus on who our audience might be while working on this report. In this case it would be scientists or other professional entities which translated into my work by choosing a professional photo, writing in a professional tone, and using information that is geared towards the purpose of my writing.
We then worked on a group project known as the Proposal project. This assignment’s main focus was on collaboration as it was done in groups of students. My group was known as the Dam Good Beavers made up of Yelixa, Perla, Edras, and me. We worked together on various components of the project such as coming up with a name, deciding the location, figuring out the overall design/layout, etc. However, we also split up the work amongst different people in the group such as the responsibility of researching and writing about a certain aspect of the project based on each member’s qualities. There was definitely a lot of research that went into the completion of this assignment with each section requiring its own information, making us even more proficient in finding and reading scholarly articles. With so many scholarly sources being used for this project, we got really good at synthesising information which could be evidently seen with how we picked the most popular aspects of each college student center to incorporate into our own, how we used multiple different sites to determine the cost of the final project, and how we included many different benefits when explaining the impact of having a successful student center. Obviously with any research we did, we had to make sure it was cited properly in APA format. There were also many instances in our process of writing the proposal that you could consider drafting as we would read and make improvements to each other sections when someone finished their work. The audience of our work was also really important to take into consideration. We did this by making sure our writing was done in a professional manner, our information was well researched, the layout was created in a way that would make it easier for the reader, and when presenting we made sure to speak in a clear and concise manner. The technology for this assignment was Google Docs, Google slides, CCNY library database, and Brightspace. Overall, I would say that this project helped me make the most improvements in communication, and public speaking.
One of our final major assignments was creating a technical description on a topic of our choosing based on our major. For this assignment I chose to write about 3D bioprinting vascularized organs as it was something I was interested in researching finding multiple different sources on the CCNY library database. In reading the research I chose what information was important to the concepts being described synthesising all of the different information across the variety of sources I used. These sources were properly cited in APA format which is evident in my reference page. I had also gone back and made many changes to my writing and formatting when creating this project drafting as I went along in order to ensure that all of my information was clear to the reader. The technology I used to accomplish this project was Google Docs, Google Slides, CCNY library database, and Brightspace.
Other than those major assignments, we also had a couple of smaller assignments and coursework assigned such as the Introducing You! paragraph where we had to write a short summary about ourselves answering specific questions and respond to two other students’ writing, and the lessons on improving our writing through grammar that lead up to a Quest which tested the skills we learned from them. For these assignments we used aspects of collaboration such as learning the material together as a class and commenting on other peoples discussion posts. We also had to read the material being taught and that was present in other students’ introductory paragraphs. The technology used for these assignments was pretty much just Brightspace since that is where everything was posted to.
In the end, I learned so much through taking this course and was able to improve many life skills that I know will be helpful throughout my future career. All of the expectations were clear and understandable, the assignment requirements were laid out for us before starting our work, and I had everything I needed to be successful in this course.
